Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson faced significant challenges both on and off the field during his tenure with the organization. Reports reveal that Watson, now 29, received at least one death threat during the 2023 offseason. According to Jason Lloyd of The Athletic, Watson’s agent, David Mulugheta, received a disturbing email in June of that year. The email threatened to either shoot Watson or burn down his house. A police investigation was conducted but closed without identifying any suspects.
Watson’s time with the Browns has been tumultuous, marked by both injuries and controversy. After joining Cleveland in a blockbuster trade from the Houston Texans two years ago, Watson signed a $230 million fully guaranteed contract, a move that drew heavy criticism. His arrival came amid allegations of sexual misconduct brought forth by more than two dozen women. Watson settled 23 civil lawsuits and was suspended for the first 11 games of the 2022 season by the NFL.

On the field, Watson struggled to meet expectations. His 2023 season was cut short after just six games due to a shoulder injury, and his 2024 campaign ended abruptly in Week 7 when he tore his Achilles against the Cincinnati Bengals.
