Report: Broncos Pass Game Coordinator John Morton is Emerging as a Contender for Lions Offensive Coordinator Role

Following Ben Johnson’s move to head coach of the Chicago Bears, the Detroit Lions are considering Denver Broncos pass game coordinator John Morton as a potential replacement for their offensive coordinator position.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Morton has surfaced as a key candidate for the role. Morton, who recently interviewed with Lions head coach Dan Campbell, previously worked with the Detroit staff a few years ago.

Morton, 55, has a long and varied coaching career that began in 1998 with the Oakland Raiders as an offensive assistant. His extensive experience spans roles with multiple NFL teams, including the Saints, 49ers, and Jets, along with stints in college football at USC and the University of San Diego. Morton joined the Broncos in 2023 as their pass game coordinator under head coach Sean Payton and is now seen as one of the top candidates to succeed Johnson in Detroit.

With Johnson having significantly impacted the Lions’ offense, Campbell will need to find a capable replacement, and Morton could be the ideal fit.
