Criticism Mounts Over Ohio State’s Hiring of Matt Patricia as Defensive Coordinator.

Ohio State’s decision to hire former NFL coach Matt Patricia as its new defensive coordinator has sparked debate among analysts and fans. While Patricia brings extensive experience from his time with the New England Patriots and Detroit Lions, many question whether he is the right fit for the Buckeyes’ defense.

Head coach Ryan Day defended the hire, citing Patricia’s “deep understanding of defensive schemes” and “track record of developing talent.” However, skepticism remains, especially regarding his lack of recent experience in the college game

Patricia’s time as head coach of the Detroit Lions (2018-2020) ended with a disappointing 13-29-1 record, raising doubts about his ability to lead a defense at a high level. Additionally, his most recent coaching stint with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 was met with mixed reviews, as the Eagles’ defense struggled late in the season.

“Patricia’s defensive philosophy has worked in the NFL under Bill Belichick, but translating that to college football is another challenge,” said ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit. “He hasn’t coached at the collegiate level since 2005, and today’s game is very different.”

One of the biggest concerns surrounding Patricia is whether his complex, NFL-style defensive schemes will work in a fast-paced college environment. College offenses, particularly those in the Big Ten, rely on tempo and spread concepts that could pose problems for a coordinator accustomed to the more structured NFL game.

“Patricia’s defenses in the NFL were often conservative and reliant on veteran players making adjustments,” said an anonymous Big Ten coach. “In college, you have younger players who need simpler schemes to play fast and confidently. That’s going to be a major adjustment for him.

Another area of concern is Patricia’s ability to recruit and connect with college athletes. Unlike the NFL, where players are professionals, college coaches must actively recruit top talent while also developing them over several years.

“Recruiting is the lifeblood of college football, and Patricia has never had to do that at a high level,” said 247Sports recruiting analyst Steve Wiltfong. “It’s one thing to scheme against elite offenses; it’s another to convince a five-star linebacker to come play for you.”

Despite the skepticism, Ohio State remains confident that Patricia can elevate their defense. He inherits a talented but young unit that will need to quickly adapt to his system.

If Patricia succeeds, he could prove his critics wrong and solidify his reputation at the college level. If he struggles, the Buckeyes risk falling behind their top competitors in the Big Ten. One thing is certain: all eyes will be on Ohio State’s defense in 2025.
