Texas tech raiders: Raiders announces groundbreaking deal as former Coach returns..

In a significant move, Texas Tech University has announced the return of former offensive coordinator Eric Morris to the Red Raiders’ coaching staff. Morris, a Texas Tech alumnus and former player under the late Mike Leach, previously served as the team’s offensive coordinator during Kliff Kingsbury’s tenure. After departing in 2018 to become the head coach at Incarnate Word, Morris had stints at Washington State and most recently as the head coach at North Texas. His return to Lubbock is expected to bring a renewed vigor to the Red Raiders’ offense, leveraging his deep-rooted connection to the program and his innovative offensive strategies.

This announcement comes amidst a series of coaching changes for Texas Tech. In December 2024, head coach Joey McGuire made significant adjustments to his staff, including the departure of defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter and defensive passing game coordinator Marcel Yates. These changes were prompted by a challenging season where the Red Raiders’ defense struggled, allowing an average of 305.3 passing yards per game, the highest in the Big 12 Conference.

To address these defensive challenges, McGuire appointed Shiel Wood, formerly the defensive coordinator at Houston, to lead the Red Raiders’ defense. Wood brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective, aiming to revitalize a defense that underperformed in the previous season. Additionally, Rob Greene was hired as the safeties coach, reuniting with Wood after their collaboration at Tulane in 2023.

On the offensive side, the departure of offensive coordinator Zach Kittley, who accepted the head coaching position at Florida Atlantic University, left a significant vacancy. Mack Leftwich, previously the offensive coordinator at Texas State, was brought in to fill this role. Leftwich’s offensive philosophy aligns with Texas Tech’s dynamic playstyle, and his collaboration with Morris is anticipated to enhance the team’s offensive performance.

The return of Eric Morris, combined with these strategic coaching appointments, signifies Texas Tech’s commitment to strengthening its football program. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how these changes will translate on the field in the upcoming season.
