Texas Makes Major Announcement on Tre Johnson..

Texas basketball guard Tre Johnson has had a remarkable freshman season in 2024-25, making a significant impact on the team. His outstanding performance has garnered national recognition, and he has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year, as well as earning a spot on the All-Conference second team. Johnson’s achievement marks the first time a Longhorn has received the Freshman of the Year honor since Jaxson Hayes, who now plays for the Lakers, won it while Texas was still part of the Big 12. With this accolade, he joins an elite group of ten players in the school’s history, including notable alumni like Tristan Thompson and Kevin Durant.

Johnson excelled during what could be his lone season with the program, averaging 20.2 points, 2.8 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game. He played in 29 games, shooting 39.5% from three-point range and 80% from the free-throw line.

He claimed the SEC regular season scoring title, surpassing Alabama guard Mark Sears, who averaged 19.2 points. His exceptional performance also resulted in him receiving five SEC Freshman of the Week awards. Johnson had several memorable games as a Longhorn, including a remarkable 39-point performance against Auburn in February. He will aim to maintain his high level of play when the Longhorns face No. 12 Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament on Wednesday.

Although the Longhorns concluded the regular season with a record of 17-14, making it unlikely for Texas to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament, Johnson provided fans with a memorable season and has solidified his place in the program’s history.
