The last marathon was held in 2019, before being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing border restrictions. With North Korea slowly reopening, the government hopes the event will boost tourism and signal a cautious re-engagement with the international community.

Runners will once again get the rare opportunity to race past Pyongyang landmarks such as Kim Il Sung Stadium and the Arch of Triumph, making it one of the most unique marathons in the world.

Event organizers have not yet confirmed exact dates or entry guidelines, but travel agencies that specialize in North Korean tourism are already preparing packages for international runners and visitors.

This revival of the Pyongyang Marathon 2025 is seen as a symbolic gesture of North Korea’s efforts to restore normalcy and reconnect through global sporting events.
