North Korea to Host First Pyongyang Marathon in Six Years
North Korea is set to revive one of its most anticipated sporting events — the Pyongyang Marathon 2025, marking its return after a six-year suspension. The race, which typically draws hundreds of international participants, is scheduled to take place in the heart of the capital, showcasing both athleticism and the rarely seen streets of Pyongyang.
The last marathon was held in 2019, before being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing border restrictions. With North Korea slowly reopening, the government hopes the event will boost tourism and signal a cautious re-engagement with the international community.
Runners will once again get the rare opportunity to race past Pyongyang landmarks such as Kim Il Sung Stadium and the Arch of Triumph, making it one of the most unique marathons in the world.
