Some ACC football coaches recently spoke to Athlon Sports and here are some of their takes with the season now just under three months away.
ACC football coaches give annoymous takes on Virginia Tech for 2024
Some ACC football coaches had interesting takes on the Hokies as they prepare for the 2024 season. Here is what some coaches had to say and we’ll give our take on what they said.
“No one’s sure if they can go back to the old days, where Brent Pry is talking about ‘being Clemson before Clemson,’ but they’re showing proof of concept already. Recruiting is better — they’re still building out their state and the Carolinas — and the defense is the soul of the program.”
“The offense finally clicked when they replaced [Grant] Wells with [Kyron] Drones, and now they can rally around him. He’s a big, solid runner, and if they can improve on his field vision and slow some things down, they can take that next step.”
“They’re not in the class of an FSU or Clemson, but there’s a good chance they’re the best of the rest by season’s end.”
“Pry committed to the long-term rebuild here, and it’s starting to show results.”
There is no question that the defense will be good this upcoming season, but the offense could be just as good. Yes, most of the transfer additions were on the defensive side for coordinator Chris Marve, but offensively, they could be much better than last season when they rolled through the second half. The turning point was when Wells went down with an injury and Drones took over.
Virginia Tech is not in the class of Florida State or Clemson right now, however, I agree that there is a good chance that they’re the rest of the best by the end of the season, but to be in that category, they will need wins over Miami and Clemson. It’s doable. Finally, yes, the results under Pry and his staff are coming together quicker than anyone thought when he was hired.
Again, the 2024 season can’t come quick enough.
