Fresh off a 7-2 swing through California, the Yankees are toned, tanned, fit and ready for a six-game homestand that kicks off tonight against the Twins. They swept the Twinkies on the road a couple weeks ago, outscoring their opponents 14-1, and will look to continue that dominance tonight in the Bronx.
Luis Gil turned 26 yesterday, and hopefully didn’t stay out too late celebrating his birthday and being the recipient of the AL’s Pitcher and Rookie of the Month awards. His 0.70 ERA in the month of May has us all drooling about what he could do in June, even if it’s going to be borderline impossible to improve. He didn’t pitch in the series against Minnesota in mid-May, meaning the Twins get their first look at MLB’s breakout ace — and their former prospect.
Bailey Ober also hasn’t seen the Yankees this year, but his propensity for the long ball could spell trouble against this powerful lineup, at Yankee Stadium to boot. He’s already given up 10 home runs in just 57 innings this year, despite solid enough strikeout numbers and a top-15 walk rate. The way to score on Ober is to take him deep, and the Yankees should be hunting for mistakes.
There aren’t any surprises in the Yankees’ lineup today. It’s all the normal characters, with Jose Trevino taking his turn behind the plate and DJ LeMahieu manning third and batting ninth.
