Angel Reese saves record-breaking streak as Sky teammate gives her last-second touch
WNBA rookie Angel Reese saved her double-double streak, extending her place atop the all-time leaderboard in dramatic fashion after surpassing Candace Park’s record this past weekend
Angel Reese’s record-breaking double-double streak is not over yet. The Chicago Sky forward surpassed 10 points after Chennedy Carter fed her the ball in the final seconds and she drew a foul to notch her 10th and 11th points from the free-throw line.
Chicago defeated the Atlanta Dream, 78-69, and the crowd went wild when Reese reached the needed scoring threshold after already securing 13 rebounds on Wednesday.
Reese has now registered 14 consecutive double-doubles – the longest run in WNBA history.
Previously, Candace Parker held the WNBA record with 12 double-doubles in a row.
Because of foul trouble, Reese’s run came dangerously close to ending. She was stuck at seven points entering the final minute. Even after making a layup with 25.1 seconds left, the 22-year-old seemed out of luck.
But Carter burst forward with the ball following a Marina Mabrey block, clearly wanting to give Reese a chance to extend her record despite the Sky not needing to put up a shot given the scoreline.
Carter fed Reese in the post, and Reese drew a foul on Tina Charles before making both of her foul-line shots to reach 11 points.
Despite not carrying a connection before Reese entered the league this year, Carter and Reese have quickly become close friends. And Reese will appreciate Carter’s thoughtfulness on Wednesday.
“That’s the Chenn to the Barbie,” Reese told reporters recently. “I mean, I love Chennedy so much, she brings so much energy. She’s probably the fastest player I’ve ever played with. … So just being able to continue to play with her and build confidence with her.”
