With Boston in the NBA Finals, former Blue Devil Jayson Tatum is naturally getting a lot of attention. Just 26, Tatum has become one of the best players in the NBA today, but the Celtics have not won a championship since drafting the former Duke star in 2017 and, fair or not, he gets a lot of blame for that.
Boston has hit a higher gear this post-season though and if the Celtics win, as we’ve seen before, he will probably be reassessed.
It happened to Kevin Garnett, and he has some thoughts about what Tatum may experience if the C’s win.
In fact, some people are already asking if Tatum is one of the all-time great Celtics and, because of the supremely high standards for that franchise, that’s a very different conversation.
Boston has legends of the game – true legends – like Bill Russell, Larry Bird, John Havlicek and Kevin McHale. There’s a lot of room for debate but the second-tier legends, arguably. are people like Dave Cowens, KC Jones, JoJo White and Garnett.
Tatum has become a tremendous player, but the standards of greatness in Boston are insanely high and the main requirement to be considered as a great is simple: win a championship.
After he does that, the conversation can begin in earnest. It’s the burden and glory of being a Boston Celtic.
