Atletico Madrid are emerging as favourites to sign West Ham centre-half Nayef Aguerd in a £20 million-plus swoop. This would represent an incredible loss of £10 million on the defender David Moyes chased for over two years.
The Spanish giants hope to agree on a fee with the Hammers for the 28-year-old Moroccan, who is keen to move to LaLiga. Aguerd had been expected to join a Saudi Pro League club, but no team has come close to making an acceptable offer.
Aguerd’s career never truly got going at West Ham following an injury in a pre-season friendly against Glasgow Rangers. He did play in the Europa Conference League final victory against Fiorentina, but he struggled for form last season.
He recently changed agents in an effort to secure a move away from East London, and there were rumours from within the club that the player was less than committed to West Ham in the build-up to the African Cup of Nations.
Fabricio Bruno and Max Kilman remain potential targets for the Hammers, although the former may have priced himself out of a move with his wage demands.
